GLOSSARY

Accessorial (Additional) Services   Extra tasks the movers are required to carry out including packing, unpacking or any additional stopovers.  These additional services are included in your Noteworthy Moving Systems estimate.

Advanced Charges   Charges for services performed by someone subcontracted by Noteworthy Moving Systems and charged on the bill of lading.  This could be an electrician or craftsman that you requested.

Agent   A local moving company or person authorized to act on behalf of a larger company.  Noteworthy Moving Systems is not an Agent, we are the moving company.

Appliance Service   The preparation of major electrical appliances to make them safe for shipment.  Included in the Noteworthy Moving Systems estimate.

Bill of Lading   The written receipt/contract, provided by the mover, of the goods to be transported.

Carrier   The mover responsible for the transportation of one's property.

Claim   A report that a customer's property was damaged or lost while in the possession of the mover or an agent authorized by the mover.

C.O.D (Cash on Delivery)   The payment which must be provided prior to delivering your goods to the specified final destination or to a warehouse.  Decide in advance the method of payment - cash, credit card or check.

Cost of the Move   Hourly rates and cost of materials used to calculate moving costs.

CPUC   California Public Utilities Commission.  The Commission has regulatory and safety oversight over moving companies, railroads, light rail transit agencies, rail crossings and for-hire passenger carriers.  Authority over household goods carriers is limited to registration of operations and filing evidence of liability insurance.  Noteworthy Moving Systems' permit number is MTR0158484.

Depreciation   Lowering of the value of a property.

Door-to-Door Service   The services provided by your mover between the point of origin and the point of destination.  An important feature of Door-to-Door service is that it does not include services like warehouse handling, storage during transit, etc.

Estimate   Estimate of what Noteworthy Moving System believes will be the cost of the move.  We have been in business for 31 years and our estimates are fairly accurate.

Full Service Mover   The full service mover, such as Noteworthy Moving Systems,  will take care of every detail of the move i.e. packing, loading, hauling, and unloading.

Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service   A top quality service provided by the mover, with pickup and delivery dates set and guaranteed in advance.

High Value Article   These are items included in a shipment valued at more than $100 per pound ($220 per kilogram).

Homeowner's Insurance Policy   A type of residential insurance covering both the house and everything inside it.  Household goods may be partially covered while in transit.

Hourly Rates   These charges are quoted based on hour per man per truck.

Household Goods   Personal effects or property being used in your home.

Inventory   A detailed list, specifying the quantity and condition of the items to be shipped.  Because moves using Noteworthy Moving Systems are generally completed in one day, inventories are only taken if you will be using a storage facility.

License   Movers must have a license issued by the correct official authorities in order to conduct moves on a local, intrastate, and interstate basis. Unlicensed movers may be cheaper, but their insurance, safety standards, and financial standards will almost certainly be lower than those of licensed movers.
Local Move: If the move does not exceed a distance of 40 miles (64km.) and is within state boundaries, it is considered as a local move. Typically, local moves are charged by hourly rates.

Linehaul Charges  Charges for vehicle transportation portion of your move.  Included as part of your estimate.

Loading Ramp   The self-service movers provide a loading ramp which is an inclined plane used for loading goods into the truck.

Long Carry  Excessive distance between the moving truck and the residence.

May  An option to do something that is not required.

Moving Broker   Middlemen who find movers for you.  Most moving company websites are actually setup by moving brokers who get a commission for passing you to a real moving company.

Mover  A motor carrier engaged in the transportation of household goods.

Must  A legal obligation that must be done.

Non-Allowables (Prohibited Items)   There are certain things that cannot be accepted for shipment.  Prohibited items include chemicals, flammable, corrosive or explosive items as well as food and other perishables that may spoil in transit.  A short list can be seen here:  Moving Hazardous Materials 

Order Number   The number used to track and identify your shipment.

Overflow   When the moving trucks scheduled for the job cannot fit all your belongings. An additional moving truck will be used to move any remaining objects.

Packing Service   Customers who opt for full-service moving, will benefit from professional packing and unpacking services which your mover provides.  This is a service provided by a full service mover where an entire packing and unpacking activity is handled efficiently by the moving company itself.

Permanent Storage   Storage of goods for an unlimited period of time.  Permanent storage will begin immediately after the initial storage-in-transit period expires.

Should  A recommendation of what should be done, but not a requirement.

Shuttle Service   When a larger moving van is restricted by physical constraints, a smaller size vehicle is used to transport items to or from a location.

Standard Coverage   The mover provides the customer a free standard coverage on damaged goods (such as 60 cents per 1pound).

Storage-in-Transit (SIT)   When you move, your new residence may not be quite ready for occupation.  The 'storage-in-transit' option can be defined as the interim period during which a customer's belongings go into storage, indicating that it is a temporary stopover before the goods are delivered to their final destination.  Valuables stored in such a facility, will be taken care of by a moving company or by a trusted local warehouse.  During this period, the customer will comply with the rates, terms and conditions agreed upon at the time the contract was signed.  After this initial period ends, the goods will be placed in permanent storage, with access determined by the warehouse operator.  Customers will thereupon be subject to the rules and regulations of the warehouse.

Valuable Articles  The customer is responsible for disclosing the valuable articles that cost more than $100 per pound so that they are packed safely by the mover.

Valuation   Valuation is the liability coverage provide instead of insurance. The extent of the liability is agreed upon and specified in the bill of lading.  It is the degree worth of the shipment and is a charge which compensates the mover for assuming a greater degree of liability than is provided for in the base transportation charges.  There are three types of valuation:

1. Declared Value   This valuation is based on the shipped items' total weight.  The depreciated value of the damaged property is used for calculating the reimbursement.
2. Lump Sum Value or Assessed Value   In the event of transporting priceless and valuable items, this valuation is recommended.
3. Full Value Protection   The customer is reimbursed for any lost or damaged items.

Warehouse Handling   Additional costs charged for while your goods are placed in storage-in-transit.
